Dear valued members,

It has not been like May at all. We had some rainy days and many cloudy days. In the morning, it was still a little chilly. We even wanted to turn on a heater

It was really a sunny and very hot day today. I think the real May begins when it almost ends. How about your place?

Our Koi are doing great in ponds, and I am sure yours are, too.

Here is May newsletter. Please enjoy.

Snow scene in Niigata
Snow scene in Niigata
On 12th-14th on April, I made another trip to Niigata.
Many cherry trees were in full bloom and so beautiful in Nagoya where I live.  But as I came closer to Niigata,  I still saw a lot of snow left.  It looks like Spring has not arrive at Niigata yet.  It was good that my wife got me a jacket at least.
You may think the weather affects my Koihunting.  In fact, most of the breeders now have greenhouse where their Koi can spent winter.  So weather it snows or not, nothing stopps my Koi hunting!  I was really excited what kind of Koi I would meet this time.
I stopped by Mr. Seiji Hiroi of the Kokugyokan, first.  He is famous for top show quality Koi . I also visited Miyatora Koi Farm an established Koi breeder.
Taisho Sanshoku of Kokugyokan
Taisho Sanshoku of Kokugyokan
Sumi pattern is the most important about Taisho Sanshoku*.
In general, there are many Taisho Sanshoku that  has excellent Hi* pattern, but very few that has excellent Sumi design as well as Hi pattern.
Look what I found at Kokugyokan. This Taisho Sanke not only has excellent Hi pattern but also outstanding Sumi arrangement.
Large Sumi are located on its shoulder, the back, the trunk and the tail section. These Sumi at absolute necessary spots are  called Tsubo Zumi*.  The body is smooth and ideal.  Hi is still a little weak. It should not be a problem if we feed color enhancing food.  This will be a grand champion candidate at any Koi shows in the US.
Mr. & Mrs. Hiroi and myself

Mr. Seiji Hiroi and his wife of Kokugyokan
Mr. Hiroi has been working in Koi business for 38 years and is known for raising first class Koi.
There are more than 200 breeders in Niigata. Even among them, he places himself in a unique position.
He basically does not breed Koi. He is more like a dealer in Niigata. He buys and raises fine quality Koi that other breeders produced in Niigata. It sounds easy but it is not. it requires very high eyes on Koi because you must be able to ascertain the future potential of Koi. This is not a type of business for every breeder in Niigata. He is probably one of the very few who can do this.

Mr.Katsunori Miya, President of Miyatora Koi Farm
Taisho Sanshoku of Miyatora Koi Farm
Miyatora Koi Farm is a famous and established breeder with the history of 78 years. .
His Koi has won many grand champioons at Niigata Koi Show.
Especially, his Taisho Sanshoku are supreme!
He showed me one of his favorite and proud Taisho Sanshoku this time.  Look at the picture below. It is truly a gorgeous Sanke!  By the time, I have spent more than I should in this trip. But, after all, I am also one of the Koi crazy guys. I could not resist it.
When you have a chance to go to Niigata, Miyatora Koi Farm is definitely one of the stops.

Taisho Sanshoku of Miyatora

Mr. Miya's comment

"I stocks 15 excellent Koi in this particular pond.
This is one of the best Taisho Sanshoku here.
The design of Hi and Sumi is really magnificent on this Koi.
This is only 3 years old, and it is still Tategoi* I am very confident in the quality and potential in this Koi. I hope she can find a good home in the US."
