Dainichi Koi Farm
I paid a visit at Dainichi Koi Farm in Niigata around the middle of May
.
Since Mr. Minoru Mano founded Dainichi Koi Farm in 1962, the farm has produces many unforgettable Koi and become a Japanese representative breeder. Mr. Mano passed away about 3 years ago and his three smart sons cooperate to suceed the established name.

The biggest assets that Mr. Minoru Mano left for his children are its excellent parental Koi which bred many grand champions. With the greatest assets, they work hard to produce even better Koi than what their father produced.
The Kohaku at left is an excellent Kohaku and won grand champion at All Japan Nishikigoi Show of ZNA(Zen Nippon Airinkai) in autumn, 2002.

Meeting in every morning
Dainich begins its day with the meeting at 8:00a.m
Dainichi Koi Farm begins with a morning meeting every day. There are 12 members including 91 year-old grandmother(Kichi), three brothers, their mother and 7 employees.
Kichi does not fail to hear all the contents of the discussion. And she speaks sometimes.
Surprisingly, she works every day with the other staff members. She is good at culling fry.
Sorting Koi fry is the important key of sucess in breeding business. The secret of culling Dainichi Koi maintains and raise the fame of Dainichi Koi Farm.

Feeding Koi is the first thing to do after meething every day.
I joined with Hiroshi, the second brother to feed their Koi.
Dainichi Koi Farm has 130 mud ponds.
Therefore, they take advantage of automatic feeders.

Shigeru, the third brother, sterilizes every pond in June

The beginning of June is a spawning season in Niigata.
So they sterlize the ponds for fry with lime.
The purpose is to kill harmful insects that eat fry as well as to improve the soil.

The stoking of Tosai

One of my goals at this visit was to get some of the excellent Tosai.
Out of about 300 Koi, I carefully select 100 Tosai.
Koi from Dainichi is known for the good quality inside and outside of Japan.  
Even if the design looks similar, Dainichi Koi will show its real beauty as it grows.

This is Tategoi Kohaku with energetic and interesting single Hi pattern


The single Hi pattern run from its head through the tail section dynamically.
Hi pattern on its head expresses a distinguished article. It continues to color its back,winding through the tail section boldly.
Maki* of both bellies will help this Koi show the distinguished appearance.
And coloration of Hi is uniform and proves highest quality.
Shiroji in every point is snow-white.
This single Hi pattern of highest quality will show the true value as it grows big.

Harmony of bright Hi and powerful Sumi is beautiful.
First, Hi pattern begins ideally from both eyes.
Afterward, zigzag pattern is drawn to the trunk section in bold touch .
Thick and uniform Hi is the best quality of Dainichi 's pride.
And Sumi of Taisho Sanshoku emerges from the back to the tail section.
In future, when Sumi on the entire body is gathered up clearly, it will compose supreme beauty.
Of course, quality of Shiroji is high-level, too.

The brilliant Tategoi of Dainichi Showa


Vivid Hi and powerful Sumi are arranged so refinedly.
First, Hi pattern starts from lovely mouth Hi.
Next, bright Hi is drawn from its head to the trunk in a bold touch.
The triangle Hi of the tail section keeps total balance.
And now Sumi emerges remarkably.
It matches nicely this active Hi pattern on the fresh Shiroji.
Shita Zumi* on the head, the left back and the right trunk will finish in lacker black with growth.
