-Monthly Newsletter from Japan Koi Online-
2003/7/26.VOL.004.HTML

Dear valued members,

My father just turned 60 years old this month. In Japan, the 60th year is called "Kanreki." At sixty years of age, the sexagenarian cycle is completed and we return to the zodiac sign of the birth years. So we in Japan celebrate their sixtieth birthdays and wear a red vest on this day. Red vest not only means that they come back to the baby year but also red is the charm against the evil.

Though I was not able to celebrate his Kanreki in Japan, I presented the red vest and hat. It seems to be really interesting to see him in a sort of baby clothes :)  If I am lucky enough, I can get the picture from him and show you on the next newsletter.

This newsletter features Spawning of the famous Isa Koi Farm. I am sure you will find it very interesting. Please enjoy.

Breeders say "Silk worm pupea is the best food for Koi"

Top Quality from
Kawaguchi Shoten Co., Ltd.

Japanese Silk Worm Pupea
In Summer time when is the best growing season of the Koi, breeders release their Tategoi to large mud ponds. Then, they feed silkworm pupea.
From the experience of the breeders, silkworm pupea is the best food to grow Koi plump and lustrous. Scientifically as well, this is proven. The proportion of protein is very close to the composition of protein Koi has. So Koi can absorb the protein of silkworm naturally and effectively.

We buy silkworm pupea from Kawaguchi Shoten, who is an established silk dealer. They always make FRESH dry silkworm pupea available for breeders and Koi hobbyists in Japan.

You may not want to feed only pupea to your Koi. But as a treat, this is a great source of nutrition. I definitely recommend this for the serious Koi keeper.

The scene of crossing

1)The extraction of spawn of Koi
When water temperature reaches 20 degrees (68 F) or more, production of Koi begins. This
period (water temperature of a pond rising to 20 degrees) is at the beginning of June in Niigata or the end of May. At that time virtually 200 breeders in Niigata start the extraction of spawn all at once.
I was present at the extraction of spawn of the famous breeder, Isa Koi Farm of Showa this time.
Naturally laying eggs, They let the female Nishikigoi* purse two or three males at once, and this is a general method of laying eggs of Nishikigoi. However, I do not understand which sperm of which male crossbred it for a female egg with this method. Therefore there is  ambiguity in doing selective breeding. Now, most of these methods are not practiced.

2)Artificial extraction of spawn

The method of artificial fertilization of Nishikigoi was established 25 years ago by Prof. Kurokawa of The University of Tokyo, science of fisheries section, and it was tried by an advanced breeder.
"Artificial extraction of spawn" has a lot of merits to make beautiful Nishikigoi, and over 95% of breeders adopts this method.
For "Artificial extraction of spawn", Isa Koi Farm uses parents Koi that easily worth more than 5 million yen ($42,000).

3)The eggs of Nishikigoi

Nishikigois eggs stick to green algae.
It is this technology of the breeder that lets the eggs stick unifomly like on a photograph.
Because the breeder has this high technology, they can stick them like this evenly for a photograph.
Isa Koi Farm carried out extraction of spawn for more than 15 years, but adhesion of such a wonderful egg was learned in a long amount of time.

These are called "Kego"

Incubation of Nishikigoi (birth)

When Nishikigoi lay eggs and passes 3rd, their eggs surely hatch.
A fry just after incubation is called a Kego(a young fish). meaning
small and thin fish that resembles hair.
The breeders discharge these young fish into their raising Pond of Nishikigoi and bring up them.
The beginning of June is "taking eggs" season of Koi in Niigata every year.
And born fry are brought up in the pond of fry for exclusive use.

These fries are called "Chigyo"

Fries are called "Chigyo"

The left photograph shows hatchlets, and it was taken after the 30th. When a fry is compared to a young fish, it is known that they will grow large like Koi.
And a design appears according to growth slowly.
Three months later from now, these fries will grow 10-13cm (4-5 in) and will become a beautiful figure of Koi.
