Dear Valued Members,

The trip to Chicago was very pleasant and enjoyable. It is always nice to see the many dedicated Koi hobbyists.  My father and I were  amazed and happy to see how many people are interested in Japanese Koi.

It gave us great satisfaction to see the Koi that came from JKO growing bigger, healthy and beautiful, in the wonderful city of Chicago. It is surprising to see how much these Koi have developed since we last saw them. The details are at my father's journal, I know you would really enjoy reading his thoughts on this..

Also, I would like to thank you for participating in our 1st Online Koi Show. We received more than 80 Koi pictures and they were all excellent competitors. The winners and participants are all posted on the website.

Happy Koi!

Taro Kodama

"How can I buy a good Koi for a very reasonable price?......"

This is one of the most frequently asked questions from any  Koi hobbyist.  Everybody wants beautiful Koi. But beautiful Koi are often expensive. So how can we buy Koi that may be unattractive at the time, for a good price, having confidence in their developing appearance.

The next question is how can we educate ourselves so that we can be successful when considering a koi's future development.   How can we see the potential of a particular Koi and foresee its future?

The quickest answer is to buy and experience it.  The more experience you have in raising Koi, the "better eye" you will have for it.  However,  this method is also time and money consuming.

This is why Mamoru Kodama compiled his 40-years of experience and is making it available for every serious Koi hobbyist.  He has purchased Koi and experienced this development by himself.  The knowledge of his experience over 40 years is now available for only $100.  Investing $100 will save you time and money

Here is one of the many positive responses we have had on this book:

"Dennis and I have been reading your dad's volume ll book and can't put it down.  The information with the photo's are invaluable.  We wish we had this knowledge 2 years earlier.  It definitely  would have helped us to choose koi wiser!  Please Thank him for us."- D. K. in California

Again, How can I learn how to buy a good small Koi for a reasonable price?......"

"KOKUGYO II-Nishikigoi Development"  is the answer!

Jumbo Growth!!
Silkworm products by Kawaguchi Shoten
Kawaguchi Shoten is a long-established company in the silk business since the Meiji era. Therefore, he knows exactly when, where and who produces silkworm pupae, a by-product of silk.  He uses silkworm pupae only from reliable sources. The silkworm he purchases will be dried very well and stocked in a temperature-controlled warehouse. Maintaining a very low stock, he prevents silkworms from losing their freshness. Kawaguchi Shoten always provides us with the freshest silkworm pupae.

Silk Worm Pupea

FRESH SILKWORMS OF KAWAGUCHI SHOTEN WILL MAKE YOUR KOI BIG AND BEAUTIFUL.

Most people know silkworm is an "ideal natural Koi food." Every Koi lover wants to feed nutritiously, rich and natural food to their Koi; just as wild carp has natural food that they ingest from rivers or lakes. There have been varying opinions on the feeding of silkworms... some people will say, "silkworms really do make Koi good," while others may disagree..."Why? One of the reasons lies in the quality of the silkworms.

Due to the silk sterilization effect, a silkworm pupae keeps its original form even after 10 years. Because it does not rot, it is hard to tell whether or not it is fresh inside.   The "odor", or more appropriately, the lack of one,  is a telling sign of its freshness. Although our first impression may be that silkworm will  smell bad, fresh silkworm pupae should not have any unpleasant odor.   It also tastes refreshing.  However, it may still be difficult for amateurs to distinguish the difference.

Hi-Silk21
Fresh silkworm makes your Koi Jumbo; Silk powder that strengthens liver function also makes Koi's skin pure white.

It combines fresh silkworm with "Hi Silk 21" abundantly. "It is still silkworms that grow Koi big and finish them beautifully!" said all the top Koi breeders in Japan. "The goal of making Koi food is silkworms!" agreed all the food production technicians.  Why are silkworms good? Because the composition of protein in a silkworm (amino acid) is  nearest to the protein composition of Koi, Koi can naturally absorb protein of a silkworm without any difficulty.  Fine quality silkworms are "the best natural food" for Koi which otherwise always eat processed food.

Another important ingredient is silk powder. Silk is made of protein called "fibroin". This protein contains a lot of amino acids that are absolutely indispensable for living creatures such as alanine, glycine and tyrosine. Especially, it contains more glycine than that found in 8 times the milk, or 6 times more than an egg. These amino acids strengthen liver function, improve detoxication action and decrease cholesterol in blood. When  liver function deteriorates, the skin of Koi gets yellow. In other words, strengthening their liver function will maintain snow-white skin.

Kodama's Koi Seminar
Introduction of "Japanese Koi Culture"
On 4/16, I was honored to be a guest speaker at a meeting of the Midwest Pond and Koi Society. I made a presentation about "Japanese Koi Culture" There were approximately 70 people that attended, and I appreciate that they were very keen and patient with my speech.

Lecture with real Koi
On 4/17, at Mr.Tony Malone's indoor pond (which is gorgeous), we had a Koi lecture with his Koi as living examples.

I chose 2 Koi from each variety of Kohaku, Sanke and Showa. I had them in the show tank in order refer to during my lectures. I took a Koi show style. At first, I asked the participants to judge the Koi, then I provided the answer with my opinion. Their eyes were well trained. That told me that they studied Koi seriously.

On 4/18, we checked how Koi from us have developed at Mr. Malone's house. He has purchased about 30 Koi from JKO Koi auction and most of them have matured into true beauties. Here are a few good examples:
Ginrin Showa
Mr. Malone "This Ginrin Showa(on right) is from Igarashi Koi Farm. I purchased this from Koi auction on 2/15/2003 for $55. It was 24cm (9.6".) Ginrin shined strongly and I liked the good Hi pattern. I did not think about how Sumi would develop when I purchased it."

"The left picture is how it looks now. It has been a year and 2 months now. Though there was little Sumi, it has developed in a very good balance with the Hi pattern like this picture. This became such an excellent Koi. Mr. Kodama said it was worth at least $1500 now. I feel very lucky that the Koi I got for $55 is now valued at $1500 Koi.
Taisho Sanke
Mr. Malone "I purchased this Koi (left) from Koi auction on 01/20/2003 for $160. It was about 41cm (16"). As you can see, it was mostly Hi and there was very little Sumi.  It does not look Sanke. I hesitated a little to buy this Koi as a Sanke. The reason why I bought it is that it was the Koi auction managed by the Japanese. And also I trusted Kodama since he handpicks Koi for this Koi auction.

This is such an unbelievable transformation from the first picture. To be honest, it was only the last 2 months that Sumi started developing. I was ready to give up on this Koi because it had not shown any Sumi even though I believed in the Matsunosuke bloodline. Now I am glad I did not give up and had been patient. Through this experience, I learned trusting in the bloodline and the dealer's eye who chose this Koi.
Kodama's comment
Koi changes its pattern as it grows. There are certain rules in the transformation in each variety. Studying the rule and hunting Koi with the rule, the chances are very good that you can buy high quality Koi for inexpensive price. In this sense, I am very confident that my second book "Kokugyo II" is the best study tool for this purpose.
