Living Jewels
-Monthly Newsletter from Japan Koi Online-
2004/7/31.VOL.014.HTML

Dear Valued Members,

SUMMER is here. Yahooo!  The best time of the year for the Koi crazy.  Make sure you feed them correctly and plenty. If you want to make them big and beautiful, now is the time. Feeding high protein food like Hi Silk and a color enhancing food like Champion will definitely be a big help.

Here in California, it is over 100 F. We work to sweat.  Dogs stay calm as they lay in the shade of the trees.  They dont seem to have any strengh left, even when the opportunity to bark at a stranger presents itself.  I guess you could say "they are truly laying down on the job"!    I think that our Koi are the only ones who seem to be very happy with the summer sun.

Here is our newsletter. We have a huge discount on the Japanese filter mat. So please do not miss it.

Happy Koi!

Now is the time to richen the beautiful color of your Koi. ( Feed when water temperature is above 68F.)

There are several color enhancing foods on the market. But probably Champiion has the best quality and most (10%) spirulina.  This food was originally made for the breeders, so the quality is very good. Feed your Koi with what the Japanese breeders use.

Adding Manda Nishiki to Champion will produce effective color enhancement.

Illusive color came true on Budo Koromo
Purple is considered a noble color in Japanese culture, and is probably one of the Japanese favorite colors. This color has been very difficult to create in the Koi world and had been considered as too elusive to attain.

This color was finally captured and is known now as Budo Koromo. It is not yet a perfect purple, but still a great achievement to realize purple on these living creatures. Imagine if you had to create purple from a pair of black carp. You would be at a total loss. Anybody would. But breeders in Japan spent generations  creating colors from black carp and have finally produced  this wonderful purple.

Koi enthusiasts in Japan are so impressed with the breeders' efforts, encouraging them to breed even more beautiful colors through the purchase of their Koi. In other words, beautiful Japanese Koi is the fruit of the breeders passion and a challenge to achieve the dream of the hobbyists who support them by purchasing their Koi.

In Niigata, there are three breeders who can create purple on Koi. One of them is Mr. Takano. He is 60 years old and still takes care of all of his ponds by himself.  He used to be a Koromo breeder, but now he is specializing in Budo Koromo.

Heisei Nishiki attract hobbyists with its luxurious look, while Budo Koromo certainly expresses a quiet and refined beauty. The complexity in the simplicity attracts serious Koi hobbyists.

I encourage you to get at least one of the Budo Koromo variety for your collection. This carries a very pleasing beauty. At the same time you can support the challenges of the breeder.

He says, " I am already 60 yeas old. I do not need money. I just want to perfect the variety of Budo Koromo ."

Mr. Takano's Budo Koromo is very popular in Japan. His excellent Tosai (about 8") has been traded for $1000 at the wholesale market in Japan. The quality is like the one shown above. This Koi has actually won a top award at the Japan Nishikigoi Show.

On our Koi auction, we have Budo Koromo available occasionally.
So please watch our auction closely.

When you find this variety of Koi, please check the following.
1. Shiroji contains a bluish tint. This kind of Shiroji will turn out beautiful when it grows.
2. The pattern is evenly dark on the whole.
3. Kiwa is sharp. The pattern becomes more crisp as it matures..

News
  • New Area Code
As of 7/17, our area code changed to (951).  Our new number is
    "951-672-6700"
  • Shipping Koi during summer time
Summer is the best time to enjoy Koi. They are more lively. But when it comes to shipping, we need to be careful. The heat can exhaust Koi more than a winter climate. We pack your Koi with ice packs and our extra care.  Please understand as we may need  to put less Koi in the box to ensure the safe arrival of your Koi to their new home. Thank you.
  • Koi Hunting Trip with Kodama, author of Kokugyo in Oct. (The plan is subject to cancel)
We are planning to have a Koi tour in Niigata with the Koi expert.  Meet breeders and buy their Koi with the assistance of the expert.
