Dear Valued Members,

The first month of 2005 has almost passed. I think it might be too late to say "Happy New Year!"

Last week,  our weather was nice and sunny,  but today it has become cloudy again. I am afraid that we are going to see another few days of rain.  This reminds us of our recent New Years Holiday.   During that time, we had so much rain beginning the end of Dec. right through the New Year that  the big oak tree at the entrance fell across our road completely blocking the entrance.   We also have a natural streambed that lies across the entrance to our property.  For about a week, because the rain brought so much water, the normally dry stream was flowing with water.... It sounds funny, but our staff had to walk through this stream using the plastic Koi shipping bags as "gaiters" to wade across the water.  (I should have taken pictures.) It was quite an experience.

Please note  the generous and great offer by Koi Care Kennel.  The owner, Tom Holder, has  donated the proceeds from the sale of Koizyme to help breeders in trouble. All the money from these sales will be sent to breeders in Niigata, Japan.  The details are below.

The Koi Voting Section is a new addition to our website. This was  very popular when I launched my first website, www.miyoshiike.co.jp while I was still in Japan.  After I moved to the US, this feature was removed.  But I always wanted to offer it again, because not only is it fun, but also very educational.  This time, I am posting a pair that  I used a long time ago.   I hope you will enjoy it.

Thank you and we wish you a prosperous 2005!

Koi of the month

Tancho Goshiki Sanke 15.5 in. Male
by Otsuka Koi Farm

I still recall what my father called him when I first started hunting Koi in Niigata. "He is young but a real Koishi." Koishi is the term of a true Koi professional whose only pursuit is for the beauty of Koi, instead of being after sales through mass production. He puts his efforts on one real beauty instead of compromising and having 1000 quantity of " so- so" Koi.

The "Koi -of- the- Month" we are offering is a Tancho Goshiki Sanke from him. It has a rare, tasteful and original beauty.
Its cinnabar red Hi plate is very impressive. Because it is the only red coloration on its body, this instantly attracts your attention.
Its "aged" parchment-colored skin is attractive. The tasteful coloration is a wonderful complement to the showy Hi plate.
An Asagi design has been emerging on the skin.  Ai Sumi appears little by little and makes the attractive Asagi skin.  Several square Sumi have been gathering at each point. If they gather tightly, the design of "Goshiki Sanke" will be completed.

It is very difficult to obtain "Goshiki Sanke" because of the rareness of the variety. It has such a tasteful attraction, different from "Tancho Kohaku."
This rare Koi will show its special presence in your pond. Do not let this perfect opportunity slip by!

Grand champion Showa of
36th All Japan Combined Koi Show
The 36th All Japan Combined Nishikigoi Show was held in Tokyo last weekend. There were 1700 entries. As you all know, one of the largest earthquakes hit Ojiya and Yamakoshi of Niigata, the cradle of Nishikigoi on Oct. 23 2004.  Considering the fact of the earthquake, this entry should be highly appreciated.

Grand champion this time is Showa. After Showa on the picture below won grandchampion in 1991, no Showa has won this title for 14 years. This is nothing short of a great achievement.

This Showa was bred by Maruyama Koi Farm in Yamanashi prefecture.  He got the sister of the champion from the late Mano as he was very close to him. With the Koi as the parent, he started breeding Showa. And one Showa that was bred from the parent in 1994 has grown to become the champion this year.

Interviewing Mr. Maruyama about the Showa
(Son of Mr. Motosuke Maruyama)

As you may notice, the body conformation, Hi quality and Sumi quality and overall pattern are very similar to that of the grand champion 14 years ago.  The introduction of the champion bloodline resulted in todayfs success.

Excellent Koi comes only from excellent bloodlined Koi, after all.   This is why Japanese hobbyists always try to find out about gits breeder and bloodlines.h
